Crystal River Raid
-wes mayhle-

I met Jim Shields at this event. He was a big man with a big heart. We shared many interests and quickly became casual friends. I was drawn to him because of his ever-present positivity and his desire to share whatever he could despite having many burdens that have caused many veterans crawl into small shells. Jim was a veteran of the US Army and served in Vietnam. A combat veteran who suffered from exposure to the chemical warfare we waged on that country and unbelievably on our own troops. I didn't know him for long or even considered myself his close friend but I knew him long enough to know he was a good man. We the living, lost something precious when my friend Jim Shields passed to that place beyond, where we all hope there is no tears, no pain, only happiness. Jim deserves that. I will always remember sitting in the blazing heat inside a small fake building on the battlefield getting excellent pictures of the reenactment with him; meeting him on the road as he was traveling to help a fellow vet; watching him give away his pictures to reenactors at the evening dance.

I never considered Jim a competitor to me as I often thought of other regular photographers, he was too nice of a man, he was my friend when we were photographing. I offerred to post his photographs on my website and he agreed, prepared and gave me CD's filled with his pics from a few events. What you see on these couple pages are photos from those CD's. I do not own the copyright to these photos only his spoken permission to display them on my website. And my website would feel incomplete without his photos being displayed.
